Celebrities as Role Models
Celebrities as Role Models
Whether we like it or not, there is no denying the fact that celebrities are role models for today’s youth and kids. An extremely large number of celebrities gain people’s love, admiration and respect because of their work, their looks, their money and their success. As a result, celebrities are the most commonly chosen role models for real life people because everyone wants to be rich and successful. While the real life stories of certain celebs actually provide a lot of positive inspiration for normal people, the same thing backfires badly when these celebs do things that are neither correct nor right.
One name that comes to mind about a great celeb role model gone bad is that of Britney Spears. There used to be time when every parent wanted his or her daughter to be like Britney—talented, good looking, cute, sweet, rich, successful and a virgin to boot. Over a period of time, Britney has managed to be one role model that no parent would like her child to have, what with her sex bomb image, two failed marriages, choice of loser husbands, trips into therapy and counseling and the general manner in which she has spoilt her life to totality. Normal girls who were growing up with Britney as their role model all of a sudden have no one to look up to. On the other hand, not many youngsters would appreciate the fact that they saved themselves for marriage and their husbands based on what their idol did only to find out later that Spears had lost her virginity even before she became a pop star.
Other names that come to mind are of course Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan. While Paris has never been admired for anything but her clothes, Lindsay Lohan was once again the perfect role model for young girls—young, hardworking and huge a success at such a young age. But we are sure that Lohan has led many a wee girl astray with her drug habit that is currently spoiling her own life. While all such celebrities can easily tell us to mind our own business because “It’s their life”, it cannot be denied that a celebrity’s life is never his or her own. Because of the love, affection and admiration that celebs usually get from the general public, they are duty bound to maintain a good image that acts as an inspiration for the masses.
Most of the times, celebs prove to be good role models, helping people in need and espousing relevant causes around the whole world. Unfortunately, even celebrities are human beings, and it is really hard for any human being to stay put too long on a pedestal. After all, everybody makes mistakes and asking celebs not to make any just because they are role models is too high a price to ask for their celebrity status. At the same time, we should also try to imbibe and copy good qualities from celebs and try to get rid of our bad ones instead of copying bad celeb qualities.
